New York city on black & white film

new york on 35mm film: join me for a sunday stroll downtown with a roll of black & white film.

I tend to be quite diligent with my blog posts, usually developing, scanning, and posting all within the period of about 2 weeks. Unfortunately that has gone by the wayside in the last year, so this is quite an old post. If I recall correctly, these shots were taken back in 2025 sometime and judging by what people are wearing I think it was towards early 2025.

All shots taken on a Sunday after arriving into New York early for a week long work trip. Taken on my Leica MP camera with a roll of Ilford HP5.

There was some free flower giveaway, which actually leads me to believe this was closer to Easter time.

New York is great for straight lines and gridded streets, apparently also for roadworks.

Somewhere on broadway. Always busy, even on a Sunday.

I snapped at the wrong time, I was hoping to get the full image of the model but it moved just as I press the shutter button!

I have an inherent need to take shots of old New York delis.

I always find the parking in downtown New York quite innovative…

Subway shots are a must, but not that easy handheld at ISO 400. I am glad how these shots came out considering how dark it was.

Art display for sale in Soho.

Nothing like a traditional New York bagel and sandwich joint.

This probably would have been better in colour!

Cool mobile barber!

Sky blown out as it was quite bright but I liked the architecture.

New York has some really great “long” shots.

overall observations

Not bad for a few hours Sunday stroll and mildly jetlagged. I quite like the grainy nature of HP5 and always think I should shoot it more often. I find 35mm always a bit more quick-fire shots mode as opposed to medium format that I tend to take longer composing the shot. Still, the best camera is the one with you (and I am not one to complain about that one being a Leica MP!).

Glad to get this blog back up and running!

See you next time.
