Munich photo walk with Ilford HP5+ Medium format film

join me for a spontaneous winter photowalk around munich with a mamiya 6 and a roll of ilford hp5+

2025 has been a busy year for me, and as such I have not been able to dedicate as much time to this blog as I would have liked. That doesn’t mean I have stopped talking photographs, just that I have not had the time (and trust me, it takes a lot of time) for the unenviable scanning, processing, uploading, and writing of an individual blog post. The good news is that I have quite a bit of work in the backlog, so I should be able to post quite a few interesting things before the year is out.

The shots on this post were taken at the back end of last year when I decided to go for a Sunday walk with my Mamiya in look of some photographic inspiration. The lighting was not great and a bit flat, but I still managed to find some interesting compositions.

I am always drawn to leading lines, even if it is a public walkway.

I love this shot, very Henri Cartier Bresson-esque. I think this will be a nice one to print.

I took this same shot last year with my friend Andrea both shooting large format. It is certainly faster to shoot handheld on medium format, but the results in large format are hard to beat. A good second best shot below though!

I waited for ages for someone to walk by to make the composition more interesting. I quite like the blur of the movement too, it was unintentional.

Shot with the ridiculously long 150mm tele lens of the Mamiya 6 and handheld. The composition is busier than I had in mind.

Who can resist a classic car parked on the street? I only took one film shot and have some digital iPhone ones below.

And parked right on the other side of the street the most mini of electric cars out there - looks like it came from a Minions film.

This shot would have worked better in infrared, it is a bit flat in regular black and white.

Another attempt using the 150mm lens, actually I quite like how this one came out - also look how sharp this lens is!

Classic Munich shot.

Another one my mate Andrea and I shot on large format, it is a classic composition. Tiny bit of a light leak here.

Did not get the exposure right on this one, it is too dark on the edges, but there is something futuristic about it - potentially also one to print.

I am a sucker for train stations and airplanes.

Bonus shot of Frankfurt skyline from the train as I had not quite finished the roll in Munich.

overall observations

I had a great time with the Mamiya on a normal photowalk around Munich. This is a superb travel and walkaround medium format camera.

I have plenty of more posts coming up so stick around!

See you next time,,
