first time in hong kong and i loved it! join me for a quick tour around the city, including a really fun camera emporium!
This was the fourth stop on my trip (after Bangkok, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City). I was excited to go to Hong Kong as I had never been and I knew it was a great place for both photography locations but also camera (in particular analogue) gear!
From recollection I used Ilford Phoenix 200 film (which was a bit of a disaster either due to exposure issues or it was affected by airport xray scanners). I also shot a roll of Lomochrome Color 92 (ISO 400), which I don’t think it supposed to be used for night photography but considering that the shots were OK.
I also just love the cover shot of this post. I remember nearly not being able to take it because I was holding up some of my colleagues waiting for the iconic tram to come by. There is a bit of camera shake and the exposure is not perfect, but I just love the grain and composition.
As usual, all photos clickable for full screen view and I recommend something larger than a mobile phone to look at these!
Really cool retro looking and grain galore shots landing into Hong Kong airport.
These came out quite well considering the really strange colour and incessant amounts of grain.
More red shots.
Vertical shots. These work quite well in Hong Kong because the buildings can be quite tall and streets are quite narrow, it leaves lots of strong compositions.
Commuting is an experience in of itself. I was happy to snap a few shots of the buzz.
the night shots
We were lucky to go up to a night bar & terrace with one of the most iconic views of the city. With no tripod I did my best to use a banister to carefully rest my camera on for a very low shutter shot.
These came out better than expected although the ones from the boat really are very dark it is a pity.
This is actually my favourite shot. There is something very special about it, not least the colour being so strange. This is the slight red tint from Ilford Phoenix 200 film. This was shot very early enroute to the airport
This shot was taken just before of the skyline. It is a pity about the strange exposure, but there is also something quite intriguing about this shot.
more airports and airplanes
I unapologetically take a lot of airplane shots and they are even better on film!
Semi agrees with my airplane obsession.
bonus shots - camera shop!
Here are my phone shots of a really cool camera shop. Just as well that I did not have that much time there otherwise I would have come out with something a bit more expensive than a few rolls of film! What an amazing place.
OVERALL OBSERVATIONS
I really liked Hong Kong and would definitely like to go back, this time with plenty of time for street photography and camera shop touring! Pity about the Ilford Phoenix 200 film, but then again that one of taken inside the taxi is really great. That’s what I appreciate about how precious and precarious film is, sometimes you get shots you would not have gotten if you tried.
Join me next time for Asia on 35mm film - next stop: Shaghai!
Cheers,
Neil
