Frankfurt walkabout on film

I went for a long walkabout along the river Main in Frankfurt and brought with me several medium format films including Kodak Pro Image 100, Portra 160, and Ilford PanF 50 - join me for some great early morning lighting and city views!

After living in Frankfurt for 4 years, none of these shots or compositions are completely new to me, but it is always nice to simply go for a walk with a camera and some film and see what you can find.

A through the viewfinder shot on Kodak Porta 160 in medium format. The last shot is Kodak Pro Image 100 (35mm film), which I think renders much better.

I’ve always been a fan of this bridge.

I like the leading line in this shot and even though the composition is quite busy with people, street lamps, and loads of buildings, I think it works very well.

A disused crane that still stands along the east side of the river Main and right under the new European Central Bank HQ.

“The city of the future” one of my photography friends once called this view.

The famous € sign under the old headquarters of the European Central Bank.

Plenty of opportunities for some cool “through the viewfinder” shots.

I didn’t quite nail the composition here, but I still like how it came out - with a bit of cropping it could look very nice.

I love this shot of the rowers gliding along.

If you like architectural photography, Frankfurt is the city to visit. There are always new skyscrapers, office blocks, and residential buildings popping up to increase the Frankfurt skyline.

A new building that popped up since I last lived in Frankfurt - shot on Kodak Pro Image 35mm film.

Overall observations

I always enjoy a good city walkabout, even in somewhere as small as Frankfurt (contrary to popular opinion, Frankfurt only has 750,000 inhabitants). I really enjoyed this spontaneous early morning stroll along the river Main and then into the city and ending up at the main train station.

I am all caught up with my winter shots, so now time to plan some spring shots and think about taking my large format camera gear back out for spin.

See you next time!
