Bavaria on 35mm film: Beautiful Spitzingsee

An overnight stay at the beautiful Spitzingsee sees plenty of water activities and a cable car up to a wonderful mountain pass. Join me for some unforgettable Bavarian views.

The Spitzingsee is located 72km south of Munich at an elevation of 1,084m above sea level and a depth of 16m (not that deep compared to some of the other Alpine lakes). It is nowhere near as busy as some of the other larger lakes (e.g. Starnberg, Ammersee), probably because it has no direct train line going to it. We enjoyed an overnight stay with some great weather and plenty of opportunities to get my Nikonos camera wet!

I brought along 3 rolls of Kodak Portra 400 to pair up with the wonderful Nikonos camera.

A bit more about the gear

I thoroughly enjoyed using my Nikonos camera on this adventure, it has become my go-to camera for any outdoor activities. Of course having it on or near (or under) water is what it was designed for, however it also makes for a great “above water” camera. There was not much to shoot underwater but it was nice to have it around my neck when in the water to take some water level shots and not worry about it getting damaged.

Cable car trip

An old and not particularly stable looking cable car that takes you along the quite long route above the trees up towards the Taubenstein mountain top. The views along the route and at the top are really breathtaking (and I have been on my fair share of cable cars).

Water level shots with the Nikonos!

I can’t say here was much going underwater so just took advantage of water level shots that the Nikonos affords you with.

Vertical shots

I now prefer to show the portrait/vertical shots together as they display more normally on the site rather than having to scroll down one entire photo at a time.

Overall observations

I had a great time at the Spitzingsee. I will definitely return. Of course, good weather and some cheeky beers on the boat also help. I am glad I went up the cable car too, the views at the top were really quite stunning. As always, the Nikonos did not disappoint and paired with Kodak Portra 400 you are in for a winner. These are probably my favourite shots from Summer 2021!

I have a few more Bavarian summer posts to put up and then we are onto large format photography!

See you next time,

Neil
